Asus Zenfone 3 Max 5

Pros Big battery. Large screen. Long usage and standby time. Decent UI. Fast autofocus. Cons So-so camera. Lots of noise. Slow fingerprint scanner.

While ASUS has always plied for the high-over smartphone space, it does not ignore the mid-range & affordable segments too. With the ASUS ZenFone 3, it has become harder for users to pick-up the new flagship thanks to the higher asking price. Enter the sub-RM1,000 ASUS ZenFone 3 Max.

If anything, it is a known fact that this pricing bracket for smartphones is an interesting spot lớn be in. While it’s mostly filled with low-kết thúc entries, sometimes one can find more affordably priced mid-range smartphones. Of those that have sầu launched in the last six months, the ASUS ZenFone 3 Max stands out . Priced at RM999, it has some pretty great features that ASUS thinks can differentiate it from the rest of the marketplace.

FYI, this is the 5.5in Full HD variant.

Let"s see how real that clayên truly is.

Design: Bigger yet not Brighter

*

The original ASUS ZenFone 3 Max is 5.2in, making slightly lithe & easier khổng lồ hold. This 5.5in take provides just the right amount of space for users as it occupies the space that the ASUS ZenFone 2 once took up.

Even with the slightly bigger screen, somehow, this ASUS ZenFone 3 Max is not one of the brighter IPS entries. Thankfully, pictures & videos still look vibrant & colourful.

*

Like it"s primary brethren và predecessor, the ASUS ZenFone 3 Max 5.5in comes with a dedicated "back, trang chủ, & ứng dụng list" capacitive buttons. This means the entire screen, sans the bezels, is fully utilized. Oddly, và this is a huge disappointment for me, these primary interactive controls are not backlit, an odd move & one that makes it trickier for users khổng lồ engage when in dark locations.

Thankfully, the backplate material has a nice feel when touched, giving it a premium user experience. It also helps that its 8.3mm slim size factor provides some level of comfort when holding and handling the larger take on the ASUS ZenFone 3 Max.

*

Interestingly, the 16MPhường f/2.0 camera at the rear is regressed inside the body, ensuring any chance of the lens being scratched is minimized when this 5.5in ASUS ZenFone 3 Max variant is placed on the table. Of course, it is not 100% guaranteed.

On the left of the rear-facing main camera is a dual LED light that provides a pretty bright flash output when pictures are being snapped in the dark. As for the right side, there is a laser pointer that is used khổng lồ immediately correct the length between the back-mounted shooter and focused subject. Combined with the built-in Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF), enables a fast & very accurate focusing experience when capturing a picture.

UI và Launcher: Pure ASUS

As with other Google Android smartphones, the ASUS ZenFone 3 Max 5.5in comes with its own UI, the ASUS ZenUI. Based off Google Android 6.1 Marshmallow, it offers a decent user experience. Personally, I love sầu it just because it comes with an ứng dụng drawer.

Oddly, the menu icons feel over-sized & looks like it had been the brainchild of a Fischer Price team. It definitely can be improved.

Performance: Responsively Decent

Having spent two weeks with the ASUS ZenFone 3 Max, it is undoubtedly fast and responsive. This is even after prolonged usage. Apps launched mostly immediately when engaged. In fact, the 3GB RAM và Qualcomilimet Snapdragon 430 Octa-Vi xử lý Core thiết bị di động processor combination really outdid itself as the optimisation work that ASUS engineers carried out have sầu mix the bar really high.

There is one big minus during my đánh giá run, a finding that I am very disappointed with. Where the brochure claims the fingerprint unlocking process takes only 0.3s, real life use confirmed that hardly ever happens and often times this ASUS entrant would only recognise my fingerprint a few seconds after I engage it.

*

As for gaming, all of them launched và played well enough. 99% of the time, they all run smoothly with very little or no lag or stutter. This is even when I play intensive sầu 3 chiều games.

In terms of heating issues, the ASUS ZenFone 3 Max does get warm with heavy use though it is still comfortable khổng lồ hold & does not become lượt thích a heated iron.

Camera: Fast with Mixed Results

*

Let"s gloss over the fact that the laser autofocus on the ASUS ZenFone 3 Max is no pushover. Indeed, I really love the built-in laser pointer at the rear-plate and how it helps the rear-loaded main camera snap pictures quickly.

Personally, I"m more partial to lớn how I can use it as a ruler lớn detect the distance of an object as it acts as a great tool for those who work on building projects và work-sites.

Options wise, the camera app is loaded out with a number of features lượt thích HDR, low-light mode, và manual. On its own, the photo-taking app is intelligent enough và can detect the environment it is in so as khổng lồ properly suggest what mode can be used.

*

For all these bells và whistles, the picture quality is sub-par and, truly, is nothing lớn shout about. With HDR turned on, most pictures look good, they tkết thúc to suffer from a lot of noise. This is a surprising find considering that the camera is only limited to ISO 1600. That means the sensor is not really working to lớn the specs on paper and falls short, way short, of its delivery.

Oddly, I can’t change the aperture in manual mode &, mostly, ended up with f/2.0 for all of my shots. This is not good ASUS, not good at all.

Battery: Long Lasting

When ASUS decided to go with a 4100mAH for the ASUS ZenFone 3 Max, I wholly tư vấn the move. Even if it is just a mid-range smartphone with a medium chipset và a mildly large screen, the overall battery life is really awesome. ASUS claimed, on paper, that this 5.5in ASUS ZenFone 3 Max variant has a standby time of 38 days even!

For real world use, I managed khổng lồ push it till three full days of use. It could"ve sầu gone another day for sure if I had not been forced khổng lồ re-charge the ASUS ZenFone 3 Max when it wanted to exexinh đẹp a critical update.

*

Those who don"t lượt thích to bring a powerbank around, this ASUS entry is perfect as it can be used lớn charge up other devices. In being confident with this feature, ASUS has included an OTG cable that allows other devices lớn juice up as well and allow other USB devices khổng lồ jachồng in lớn transfer content.

Conclusion: Better than Expected

Since the ASUS ZenFone 3 Max is priced at RM999, I really didn"t expect much from it. After prolonged use, it performs way better than I would ever have guessed. Apps run smoothly & quickly, proving that 3GB RAM is more than enough for those who love sầu to multi-task và open loads of apps or browser tabs at the same time.

*

With great looks và having the cool ability lớn recharge other devices, the ASUS ZenFone 3 Max is, indeed, a decent entry. If anything, it would be hard to find another sub-RM1,000 smartphone that performs similarly.
